I just love the Old Testament!!! Wait……. before you check out due to possible boredom, let’s think about all the amazing stories and the amazing ways that God shows himself to His people through the Old Testament. God rescues and provides for His people repeatedly despite their unworthiness, their persistent unfaithfulness, and inability to trust Him. It’s the ultimate love story, the pursuit of hearts with grace and mercy that abounds on levels that us as human beings will never be able to understand. We will never be able to love the way our Father loves us. If you have not read the Old Testament you should. It is still completely relevant to us now for “He is the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). It vividly shows Gods heart for His people, and His desire to live among them.
As much as I enjoy the Old Testament, I have always loved to read the whole bible and hear all the bible stories, but towards the end of 2018’ I felt God leading me to go deeper in my devotional and bible reading time. Instead of reading the Bible through in a year, I have committed to spend however long it takes to study the Bible through, book by book, in a much deeper level then by merely reading words on a page. As I began my journey, the stories quickly came to life and branded their truths into my heart. I am in awe of the unending, immeasurable goodness of God and how He loves us despite, well despite us. I have decided that I simply cannot keep these amazing revelations He has so sweetly shared with me to myself. I mean, what good does the Gospel do if we are not sharing it with others right? Okay yes, I may be a bit of a bible nerd, but really can you blame me? Gods word is infallible, it “is alive and active. Sharper then any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12), basically it cuts through lies and reveals the truth. It draws us closer to the only One that “will never leave you or forsake you” (Deut 31:6). It teaches us the truth about who we are, how we have been adopted into God’s family, and with that adoption came His benefit package. How will you ever know what that is if you do not read it? God’s word also teaches us how to fight! We have an enemy out there that wants nothing more then to steal, kill, and destroy you, and every promise and dream that God has planned for your life. He will stop at nothing to keep you from those promises and distort your view of God’s goodness. He is the ultimate deceiver, taking God’s truth and bending it to fit his plan to separate you from God. Our greatest weapon is His word and learning how to use it. In John 8:31-32 Jesus says “if you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free”. How’s that for a benefits package!! Freedom is the goal for us all in some way or another. We long to be free from debt, free from sickness, free from fear and anxiety, we long to be free from drama, or free from addiction. I’m here to tell you that God can set you free from all these things and more, and it starts in His word. When you pair His word with the power of the Holy Spirit there is nothing that can hold you back from the goodness of God and His plans for your life.
I am so excited to be on this journey, and I hope that you will come along with me and dig into some deeper truths that are sure to bring us closer to our Heavenly Father. We will begin in Exodus, I’m not sure why I did not start in Genesis, but this is where I felt God leading me. I will tell you that the study of Exodus has completely changed my life! I have struggles with low self-esteem, and feelings of inadequacy most of my life. As I have dug into Exodus, I have learned God’s immense desire to dwell with us, and how He has always had a plan to be as close to us as possible. This truth has melted away those feelings of inadequacy and in it’s place I have a sense of confidence and authority that has never been their before. I cant wait to share with you more so that you can also experience the truths that the Word of God offers. Until next time, seek Him in all things!!!
